Itinerary

Day 1:Spend your first day exploring Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, with its varied shops, museums, restaurants and more. There are also many Anchorage-based excursions you can do on this day if you want to get right into the adventuring.
Day 2:Take the Glacier Discovery Train to Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop where you will float in the headwaters of Placer River amidst icebergs from the massive calving glacier. After your float return to Portage on the train, then motorcoach back to Girdwood and enjoy dinner and a comfortable night sleep at Hotel Alyeska.
Day 3:Day three starts with a wonderfully scenic train ride on the Coastal Classic Train along Turnagain Arm and Grandview in route to Seward, AK. Once you arrive in Seward, you will be treated to a cruise through Kenai Fjords National Park. Watch for whales, sea lions otters and more and witness some impressive glaciers up close.
Day 4:Explore the town of Seward and surrounding area on the Real Alaska Tour. Revel in authentic Alaska-style adventures such as dog sledding, a tour of the impressive Exit Glacier, and a hearty lunch at a bona fide Alaskan roadhouse. Close the day out with a trip back to Anchorage on the Coastal Classic Train.
Day 5:Today you will be departing for Denali National Park on the Denali Star Train, the flagship train of the Alaska Railroad. The ride to Denali National Park offers some spectacular scenery for your enjoyment, including amazing views of Denali Peak on clear weather days. Arrive in Denali National Park in time for a fun night of food and entertainment at the Cabin Nite Dinner Theater.
Day 6:Spend the day in Denali National Park on a comprehensive backcountry bus tour that leads all the way to the old mining town of Kantishna at the culmination of the park road. This tour covers 92-miles of road within the park and brings you many opportunities for wildlife viewing and some fantastic photo opportunities of some of Denali National Parks most scenic vistas.
Day 7:Spend the morning exploring the Denali area at your leisure then depart for Anchorage in the afternoon and overnight in Anchorage.

Terms & Policies

BAGGAGE POLICY

Checked Luggage: The Alaska Railroad offers checked baggage service. Luggage storage is NOT available at any train station. For your safety and the safety of others, only one carry-on is allowed per person. Each ticketed passenger may check two (2) pieces of luggage when traveling aboard the Alaska Railroad, and up to four pieces aboard the Aurora Winter Train (policy may not be applicable for charters). Aurora Winter Train baggage service available in Anchorage and Fairbanks only. The luggage weight limit is 50 pounds per bag. Baggage service varies by depot location. The baggage fee for bikes, excess, oversized, and overweight bags is $20.00 per item. Due to space constraints full size non-inflatable kayaks and canoes are not permitted. You may bring deflated watercrafts for $20.00 per item.

Carry-on Luggage: One carry-on item is allowed per person. Carry-on bags may not exceed 15” x 14” x 6”. Please remember to carry on medications, cameras or other items that you will need during your train ride.

Animals: All animals must be transported in the baggage car in a kennel (provided by the passenger). There is a $20.00 fee for transporting each kennel. Only Service Animals are permitted in passenger cars.

Firearms: Firearms, including rifles and revolvers, are not allowed inside passenger coaches or depots. Firearms may be transported in the baggage car only if: (1) They are unloaded; (2) they are stored in a locking hard-sided case; (3) the bolt action is removed or a trigger locking guard is applied.
Concealed weapons are not allowed onboard any trains or in any depot. Bear Spray must be placed in checked luggage.

Hunting/Fishing: During hunting and fishing season, game and/or fish must be cleaned, packed in bags, and placed in coolers before being loaded in the bag car. Inflatable kayaks, canoes and rafts must be deflated and packed in a backpack or duffle bag.
Due to space contraints full size non-inflatable kayaks and canoes are not permitted.

Camping: The Federal Railroad Administration regulates the transport of all types of camping stove fuels and/or motor fuels on passenger trains. Federal Railroad Administration regulations prohibit the transport of fuel, other than five liters or less of white gas per container in the bag car. No propane is allowed in bag cars. Kerosene and propane may be transported aboard the Glacier Discovery Train, which is outfitted with a special compartment; these fuels must be checked with the conductor at the time of boarding. Bear Spray must be placed in checked luggage.

Luggage storage is not available at any train station. All passengers, baggage and shipments are subject to inspection.

OTHER POLICIES

PAYMENT: Full payment is required at time of booking for rail-only bookings. For multi-day travel package reservations made 36 days or more prior to travel, a nonrefundable payment of 10% of the gross booking cost is due, or the reservation will be released; the remaining payment is due in full 60 days prior to travel. Multi-day travel package reservations made within 35 day of travel require payment in full at time of booking. ARRC accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express credit cards.

LATE BOOKINGS: Package bookings that are made within 35 days require a minimum of 24 hours to confirm availability. Full payment is required at the time of booking.

REFUNDS: Adventure Packages and Day Trips that are canceled 36 or more days before travel will be refunded 90% of the booking value. No refunds will be issued 35 or less days before travel. No refunds will be issued for unused services.

Rail-only bookings that are canceled one (1) or more days before travel will be refunded 90% of the booking value. No refunds will be issued the day of travel.

CHANGE FEES: All paid bookings are subject to a 10% change fee. Changes are allowed on packages up to 36 days before travel and on rail-only bookings up to one day prior to travel. A “package” is any rail booking that includes a non-rail component. Change fees apply only to the changed value of the booking. No change fees apply when the change increases the cost of the booking. Changes to packages that include airline flights, or the Denali Backcountry Lodge or Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge, may incur additional fees. Any charges incurred by the Alaska Railroad as a result of changes made by the customer will be applied to the booking in addition to the change fee.

TRAVEL INSURANCE: We strongly recommend that you purchase trip cancellation insurance so you can plan your travel with complete peace of mind. Ask your reservations agent about available plans and for a travel insurance quote.

CHECK-IN: Plan to check in one hour prior to the scheduled departure time. Reservations and seat assignments may be altered or reassigned if passenger and baggage are not checked in 15 minutes prior to scheduled departure. The Transportation Security Administration requires that any Alaska Railroad passenger 18 years of age or older present a government issued photo ID, or two forms of ID, one of which must be issued by a government authority. Children ages 2 to 15 may only travel in the company of an adult 18 years or older.

BAGGAGE: Each ticketed passenger may check two (2) pieces of luggage when traveling aboard the Alaska Railroad, and up to four pieces aboard the Aurora Winter Train (policy may not be applicable for charters). Aurora Winter Train baggage service available in Anchorage and Fairbanks only. No single piece may weigh over 50 lbs. A special handling fee of $20 per bag applies to oversized bags, bicycles, animals checked in the baggage car and other recreational equipment. Firearms may be transported only as checked baggage and must be either disassembled (slide or bolt removed) or have a lock (trigger or cable type) installed to prevent operation, and must be in a locked case. LOST AND FOUND: Lost items will be held for 30 days. If you believe you have lost an item at the Alaska Railroad, please contact Lost-Found@akrr.com or 907.265.2576.

SCHEDULES AND FARES: Delays can occur with rail service. Do not book your rail arrival and air departure on the same day. The Alaska Railroad will not be responsible for missed connections. Schedules, fares and tours are subject to change without notice.

ALTERNATE TRANSPORTATION: The Alaska Railroad will provide the best alternate service available in the event of unforeseen circumstances that may require any part of our service to be altered.

ACCESSIBILITY: ARR will provide wheelchair lifts at all summer stations: Anchorage, Wasilla, Talkeetna, Denali, Fairbanks, Girdwood, Portage, Whittier, Spencer Glacier, Grandview, and Seward. Winter trains offer wheelchair lifts at Anchorage, Wasilla, Talkeetna and Fairbanks only. Accessibility on other connecting modes of transport can vary, so please check with an agent for details. Alaska Railroad’s passenger trains are wheelchair accessible and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Service animals are welcome aboard.

LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY: The Alaska Railroad Corporation acts only as an agent for its clients in securing reservations from the various non-affiliated hotels, transportation companies, sightseeing operators and other third parties and is in no way to be considered as the principal or operator of the services. The Alaska Railroad Corporation shall have no liability for loss or damage to baggage or property, due to acts or omissions of any third party carrier, hotel operator, restaurant or another supplier of services or facilities. The Alaska Railroad Corporation reserves the right to cancel, substitute transportation, or alter for any reason, any rail trip or tour itinerary as current conditions, in the Alaska Railroad’s sole opinion, may require.
