From rafting down the Tuolumne River to hiking beside wildflower covered meadows to star-gazing at night Yosemite in the summer is a magical place. The whole park is accessible during the warm months and the park is brimming with warm-weather activities. Although the park is the most crowded during these months it is still one of the most enjoyable vacations you will ever have.
There are some tips to make your summer vacation in Yosemite easy and fun. Getting up early is a plus as it is the easiest time to explore the park. If you want a hike or walk getting up with the birds offers you the advantage of having the valley to yourself. This is also the best time to see wildlife as they tend to stay out of the heat of the sun as the day wears on. Consider exploring outlying areas of the park as these are traditionally less crowded but just as stunning.
Making a list of the sights you would most like to see is imperative if you have limited time or go in the summer. Again if you hit these sights early in the day you will be less likely to get stuck in traffic. Save outlaying areas for later in the day when moving away from the crowds will be a welcome retreat. Also, having a “home base,” such as staying in a lodge or hotel within the park will make it easier to get up early and get out there while giving you the option to come home for breaks in between site seeing pilgrimages.
Remember that summer can get quite warm. It is best to dress in layers. In the early morning, you will defiantly need a sweater or warm outerwear that can be easily removed as the day progresses. Bringing a knapsack to store water, an energetic snack and a place to store your warmer gear is a must. Even if you don’t plan an official hike it is important to bring sturdy shoes that are comfortable to wear all day long. Last but defiantly not least make sure to bring a camera! You really can’t get a bad picture in Yosemite and you will enjoy sharing these pictures and reliving the experience long after your trip.
