Only accessible by boat or seaplane, Isle Royale is located on Lake Superior, just southeast of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Visitors come year after year to paddle the inland waterways, hike the miles of trails, venture along the coast, and explore the shipwrecks just offshore. Park wildlife includes moose, wolves, loons, beaver, fox, and many others. Encompassing 850 square miles, it is 45 miles long and about 9 miles wide. It lies approximately 55 miles from Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula and about 22 miles from the Canadian shore. Carved by the ancient glaciers that eventually formed the Great Lakes, Isle Royale is full of small lakes and inland waterways. The park is open from April 16 to November 1.
Isle Royale is accessible via seaplane or by boat. The National Park Service provides transportation for a fee aboard the Ranger III June 2 through September 12, departing from Houghton, Michigan. Visitors can expect to arrive at Rock Harbor about 6 hours after they depart from Houghton. There are other commercial vessels which provide transportation to the island as well.
