The Izaak Walton Inn was built in 1939 by the Great Northern Railway to accommodate the railroad's crews. Today the Izaak Walton Inn welcomes tourists year-round that come by car, train, or plane and still embodies the rich, railroad history that it was founded on! The Izaak Walton Inn is a beautiful historic chalet featuring historic lodge rooms, family cabins, and unique converted train car and caboose cabins.
The inn is conveniently located in Essex, Montana at the southern tip of the park serving as a great halfway point in between the west and east side of Glacier National Park surrounded by beautiful, lush forest. This pristine area encompasses a million acres of wilderness with jagged peaks, wildlife, and glaciers and offers plenty of year-round activities.
The Izaak Walton Inn is well-known for its winter adventures and world-class cross country skiing and offers snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals. Not only does the lodge include rentals, but it also offers ski lessons utilizing over 30 kilometers of maintained Nordic ski trails and in conjunction with Glacier Adventure Guides, day-tours are offered as well to see all that Glacier has to offer in the beautiful winter season. In the summertime, the Walter Ranger Station is within a mile of the Izaak Walton Inn where you can find trailheads that follow the Middle Fork of the beautiful Flathead River up to the Old Creek drainage towards the continental divide as well as other trails leading into Glacier's interior.
