Denali National Park and Preserve hosts approximately 300,000 visitors annually. The park features North America's highest mountain, 20,320-foot tall Mount Denali. The Alaska Range also includes countless other spectacular mountains and many large glaciers. Denali National Park and Preserve encompasses more than 6 million acres including a complete sub-arctic eco-system with large mammals such as grizzly bears, wolves, Dall sheep, and moose.
Denali National Park and Preserve was established as Mt. McKinley National Park on Feb. 26, 1917. The original park was designated a wilderness area and incorporated into Denali National Park and Preserve in 1980. Denali National Park and Preserve were designated an international biosphere reserve in 1976.
Denali National Park and Preserve offers a wide variety of visitor use including wildlife viewing, mountaineering, and backpacking. It continues to provide a laboratory for research in the natural sciences. Touring the Park Road by bus, attending ranger-naturalist programs, mountaineering (advanced registration required), day hiking, backcountry camping (permit required), skiing and dog mushing (winter only) are all activities that are enjoyed by visitors to the scenic area. When you come to Denali National Park and Preserve remember to bring your camera as there are amazing sights here that you will never encounter again.
Denali National Park and Preserve primary visitation season runs from early May to mid September. Visitation is lowest in winter months when temperatures can reach -40 below.
