The Appalachian Trail, or the A.T., is a marked hiking trail in the eastern United States, extending between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine. It is approximately 2175 miles (3,500 km) long. Because the majority of the trail is in wilderness visitors may encounter a wide array of wildlife, topography and plant life. Some portions do traverse towns and roads, and even cross rivers. The Appalachian Trail is famous for its many hikers.
A popular day-hike in Shenandoah National Park is Sugarloaf Loop. It is located in Shenandoah’s northern district and starts next to Skyline Drive and follows the Appalachian Trail for a brief stretch before turning off onto the Sugarloaf Trail. Along the way, you'll pass a wide variety of flora, fauna, and geographical features. At mile 3.3, tackle a moderately challenging 1-mile, a 500-foot ascent of Hogback Mountain. You will find expansive views of Shenandoah at the top, as well as the opportunity to catch views from the top of a hang gliding launch site.
You can reach the Sugarloaf Loop from the Front Royal entrance of Shenandoah National Park. The nearest hotels to this location are Hampton Inn Fort Royal and Quality Inn Skyline Drive. Both of these are wonderful options for gearing up and getting ready to set out on one of the most scenic hikes you will take.
