There’s no place like Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. Bryce Canyon, located in south-central Utah, is a series of giant amphitheaters with millions of pink rock pinnacles called "hoodoos." Bryce Canyon National Park is named for just one of many canyons which form a series of horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters on the edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in southern Utah. Bryce Canyon has a mystical feeling as the hoodoos seem to glow at sunrise and sunset. These limestone formations have been shaped and colored through erosion and oxidation of iron in the sediment.
Surrounded by the beauty of the southern Utah desert the Table Cliffs and Paunsaugunt Plateaus that are found in Bryce Canyon National Park are enchanting views that will forever be remembered. Rock layers on the Table Cliffs now tower 2,000 feet above the same layers on the Paunsaugunt. Ancient rivers carved the tops and exposed edges of these blocks, removing some layers and sculpting intricate formations in others. The Paria Valley was created and later widened between the plateaus.
At 8,000 to 9,100 feet, summer days are pleasant (the 80's) and nights are cool (40's). Afternoon thundershowers are common during mid- to late summer. Spring and Fall weather is highly variable with days of snow or days with strong sun and 70 degrees. Because of the variations in weather and temperature it is advisable to dress in layers when exploring Bryce Canyon National Park. A sweater and jacket over a t-shirt and long pants over shorts will keep you comfortable from sun-up to sun-down. Cold winter days are offset by high altitude sun and dry climate. Winter nights are sub-freezing. You won’t encounter much snow but if you do March is the snowiest month. The average snowfall is 95 inches, perfect for cross country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities.
