The depositing of many different types of sediments such as clays, sands, silt, and shale gave foundation to these amazing sedimentary rock structures called badlands. Slowly over time wind and water stripped away layer upon layer until the forces of nature sculpted these natural beauties into what they are today.
Cedar Pass Lodge, another lodging option, is older than the park itself. Opened in 1928 these ecofriendly cabins feature lodgepole pine furniture and an original dance hall where such greats as Lawrence Welk have played. The Best Western Plains Motel offers a central location for visitors coming from the Rapid City, South Dakota airport who are looking to see the badlands, Wall Drug, and Mount Rushmore. Seventyeight clean rooms and an indoor pool offer comfort, and a AAA discount is available. An affordable hotel option is the Hitching Post Motel 6 which offers kid and pet friendly accommodations at a reasonable price. The park itself has 2 campgrounds, and sites go quickly. Be sure to call the ranger station for availability and a conditions report.
