Glacier National Park offers many lodging options. From lodges to cabins you can find what you are looking for both inside and within a few miles of Glacier. The park encloses more than 1.4 million acres of pristine outdoors wilderness. Also, it was founded in 1910.
Today the park's 2 million annual tourists can explore over 730 miles of trails, indulge at the sight at 200 streams and lakes, and take in a rich diversity of rare flora and fauna. It all comes together to form one of the wildest and most pristine wilderness parks on the continent of North America.
When Glacier National Park was first established the Great Northern Railway built lodges for travelers to utilize. These lodging facilities included a series of hotels and small backcountry lodges, called chalets, throughout the park. Today several hotels and chalets, built by the Great Northern Railway in the early 1900's and updated as needed, house summer guests to the park.
In the early days, a visit to the park involved a train ride to the park. Once guests got off the train at Belton, now West Glacier, they would embark on a multi-day journey To see the Park visitors had the option of hiking or horseback riding. To make Glacier more accessible to visitors Going-To-The-Sun road was built in 1932, after 11 years of construction.
Today Going-To-The-Sun road is one of the most popular drives in the country. It is a spectacular 52 mile, paved two-lane highway that bisects the park east and west. Going-To-The-Sun crosses over the continental divide and allows visitors to experience some of the most amazing scenery in North America.
