Mixed reviews are just thst
Just returned from two nights while attending a conference at the Gideon Putnam. Having read the many mixed reviews I had some trepidation about my stay. My room was fine. The bed was comfortable, the room furnished with a desk, dresser, night table and club chair. Bathrobes were in the closet. The bathroom was dated. The soap tray was badly chipped and at first glance looked like soap had melted in the tray. There’s no vanity in the bathroom to place your own health and beauty stuff.
There is only one elevator to accommodate 6 floors of rooms. Since I was on the second floor I walked.
The hotel offers shuttle service within 3 miles and that was a welcome addition.

Total SCAM. Stay somewhere else and UBER to SPAC!
The proximity to SPAC is the only reason why this hotel has survived. The rooms and property are shamefully outdated, and the service is laughable. This would all be fine, of course, if the prices reflected the true value of the hotel.
To charge the amount they do is criminal.
If you want a place with "charm", and a good location, find a B&B downtown. If you want a nice hotel with clean rooms and modern amenities, stay at another hotel and UBER to SPAC, it will be cheaper and a better experience.
This place should be ashamed to charge $500+ a night for the service they provide.
Do not let them continue with running this scam!

Recent stay at the Gideon 8/19
We have had the pleasure of staying at the Gideon several times. Unfortunately, this will be our last stay at the Gideon. We stayed for 2 nights in August with the purpose of going to the beautiful Saratoga race track. Our stay at the Gideon was below the standard we expected. Our room had no closet, luggage rack or anywhere to hang clothes. The A/C was a noise maker only and did not provide cool air. Our windows did not open, even if they did the screens were tattered and ripped. The internet connection was poor. The toilet in our room leaked and light bulbs were missing in the bathroom. The hotel charged for a daily paper!! The rooms were pricey at over $300 a night, they could provide a daily paper. The hotel provided shuttle into town was not reliable for returning after dinner and we had to uber back to the hotel. Upon returning to the hotel after dinner, the hotel bar was closed and it was only 10pm. After our stay I contacted the hotel to share our poor experience and they did not contact us in return. There are other newer hotels in town that we will choose to stay in when we return to Saratoga in the future. Saratoga has wonderful dining and shopping-well worth the trip!

Very convenient to SPAC
The reason we chose the Gideon Putnam is because we were attending a concert at the nearby Saratoga Performing Arts Center, which is within easy walking distance through a park. That part worked really well - it was very convenient and comfortable to be able to go to the venue and it was nice not have to deal with parking. We also did discover the drawback of this feature though, which is that the hotel is within earshot of the music venue. As a consequence, you hear loud music in your room, including sound checks hours before the concert and a the noise from a concert that you may not be attending as happened with us the first night. So, if you are looking for peace and quiet, make sure you check the schedule of the SPAC as it may severely impact your ability to enjoy the hotel.
The hotel itself was disappointing. We had upgraded to a room with a screen porch that was supposed to look out over the park. In reality, we were overlooking the parking lot and the desired effect of having a screen porch with a nice park view was lost. Breakfast was disappointing and slow, the bathroom was dated and water pressure was not great, a number of electrical sockets were not working in the room and the maid had not properly restocked the coffee.
The park surrounding the hotel is really nice to enjoy with some interesting springs and geysers.
Overall, I would only stay at this hotel again if I was attending a concert.

Walked into room that may or may not have been cleaned. Trash in trash can, no soap in either sink area. When requested, told it was a busy weekend!?!! Then they double billed us for an "amenity fee". Old hotel and take advantage of the location. Got me once, never again.
