A bit beside the traditional stops in the far west but worth
For our 3rd road trip in the great West we decided to extend our experience to the less well know Chinle Canyon which is a bit beside the traditional path from Grand Canyon to Monument Valley. Honestly this was a good experience. We took the road from Tuba city to Chinle via the Hopi reservation, very remote and extraordinary scenic views. When we arrived at Chinle we were please to find the hotel which is at the entrance of te canyon and next to the Indian facility to visit the canyon. The hotel by itself is common, the rooms are not very clear neither fresh (a bit old fashioned) but fair enough for a 1 night stop. It is of course very calm. The diner was taken at the cantine (not a restaurant, no service), cheaper and quality is fine, price also ! We visited the canyon by the white house path (the only path that can be visited without the Indians (no fee then), that was nice, you need to take you car to the place before walking down and up for about 1,5h. The next day we move north East to New Mexico and Shiprock, very nice scenery again across the mountains between Arizona and NM

Nice, Clean Accommodations
My room, a double queen, was clean and comfortable. Moving the table from in front of the a/c unit solved the problem of maintaining a comfortable room temperature. When I called the office one night about not having hot water, I was told "I guess everyone was using it at the same time and it's all gone. It should reset after midnight." Fortunately, there was plenty of hot water the next morning.
The Lodge was a perfect place for our group to stay. The covered porch in front of the rooms and all the green space provided nice places to gather. It was so convenient to have a restaurant on the property. The food was good and portions were large.

Great place to stay
Room was number 9 - really a cottage with lots of space for a family. Cafeteria was basic home cooking but everything was tasty and portions were large. If you stay be sure to take the tour into the canyon with one of the Navajo guides that the lodge offers.

A hidden little gem
Thunderbird Lodge is in a lovely setting right outside of the Canyon de Chelly entrance. The room was clean and quiet, the staff was helpful. We added a guided tour of the Canyon from the Lodge for a wonderful experience. Our guide, Daniel, grew up in the Canyon, he not only knows the history but could express the importance of the area to the Navajo. Thunderbird Lodge is less expensive and a better location than the BW or the Holiday Inn.
