Worst Place to stay! BEWARE

BEWARE! We reserved a cabin there for 8/23 and when we arrived, my friend started to cry. There was a big gap in the front door, we had to use utensils to hold the very small windows open, the screens were ripped, the bed had a large dip in it and the sheets were stained. We did get our money back and we asked them how they could charge the price they do for these places. They told us that they could charge that price because they are a mile from the gate. Someone should shut them down because no one should have to stay here in these conditions. This was a Whispering Pines cabin and we asked them if there was another cabin in better shape and they said the cabins were all basically the same.

Beartooth Highway was closed, called for help with directions and no one ever answered at 4pm. Arrived at silvergate at 6pm and our keys were already on the porch and general store was closed. Cabin was easy to find with the map. Cabin was musty and dirty. Cob webs everywhere, carpet tack strip pulled up on floor. We cooked on the stove and went to wash the dishes, (to avoid the $125 cleaning fee), and the sink leaks all over the floor from under the cabinet. Mold was on the wood so this was not a one time occurrence. Shower floor did not feel safe to even shower in. Both couples slept on top the sheets and we left at soon as we could see daylight as it was raining.

***** Five Stars for everything that's good and right in the world. -* Minus One Star for an understandably burned out house keeping staff and the nightly rate. These cabins hold a truly special place in my heart. I was happy to see that they (and Silver Gate) remain as honest as I'd left them almost 40 years ago. Back then, of course, very few people bothered with the Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone ~ but back then, it cost a little less then $20 a night to stay. *gulp* Hard to swallow the new price tag... This time, however, I was on a mission to spread my Dad's ashes in the places he loved best ~ the Lamar Valley, Silver Gate, The Beartooth, and Sunlight Basin. Whatever the cost, it was worth returning. Checked in. The desk clerk was bleary, but still personable after a long season of dealing with tourists. Went to the cabin, was delighted to see that it had all the rustic charm that I remembered (plus a few upgrades: warm quilts, coffee maker, big mugs, nice towels). Sat on the porch, watched the mountain goats on the ridges. Silence. Views. Goodness. No internet. Get over it. You don't need it. Went next door to the lodge with the bar. Drank French absinthe. Ate darn fine food. Explored the exhibit about Hemingway's time in the area and had the bartender Chris Warren sign his definitive book on the subject. Went back to the cabin. Had a great night's sleep in the cold crisp mountain air. Woke up, made tea. Discovered some previous resident's gnarly head band behind the toaster all snarled with hair (that bummed me out). The counter didn't seem to have been wiped down much at all, but other than that everything was clean and tidy. Fabulous sunrise on Amphitheatre. Just the way it always was and will always be. If you're expecting first world amenities, don't go. Stay in Gardiner in some fancy hotel. If you choose to go to Silver Gate, don't ruin the peace you'll find there.

Great Stay in Whispering Pines Cabin 4

If you're looking for affordable lodging a mile from the Northeast Yellowstone Entrance, this is your place! We stayed in Whispering Pines Cabin 4 and had a great experience from the check-in process to the small, but comfortable cabin with a well stocked kitchen. The owner provided us with a spotting scope to use since we were staying 3 nights. He gave us a crash course on using the scope, which really paid off with some awesome wildlife viewing in Lamar Valley. Bringing your own food is essential in this area, as restaurants and grocery stores are scarce. We cooked a few meals in the cabin and enjoyed sitting around the firepit at the store/office in the evenings. The gentleman who was in charge of the firepit was very friendly and gave us advice to help plan our day and where to look for wildlife.
