Amazing! Staff were very helpful from Miguel to India and others. View and atmosphere was tremendous. Clean and nice. The dining area was a little bit of an issue due to its location being quite a ways from some of the buildings but if walking isn't an issue then it's fine. The sink counter in the room was on the small side with coffeemaker there etc but not a biggie. I would stay here again!

Raising the Bar on Hotel Views

Pros: • Privileged view of Mount Rushmore • Buffet breakfast included in the room rate • Minutes to the Mount Rushmore entrance Cons • Rooms are adequate but not noteworthy • Queen room had an angled view of the monument • Walking distance to town but need to descend a narrow road I booked the K Bar S Lodge because of the Mount Rushmore view. However, I was not quite sure what the view would look like from the room (the website is not particularly helpful). However, it was the offseason, and I expected that I could change the room type if the view disappointed. I reserved the queen room with a mountain view and arrived in the early evening. Despite the hotel’s low occupancy, I was not offered an upgrade (paid or otherwise), a missed opportunity from the hotel’s perspective. My room was on the second floor of the main lodge. Upon entering the room, it looked a lot like the pictures. Rather conveniently, the pictures did not show the window to the world. There were two windows that were both skylights, ushering in immediate concern about my highly anticipated view. However, after stepping up to the skylight (as you will see in the pictures, I literally had to ascend two steps), I could see the imposing and stunning face of a former president. I realized shortly thereafter that I could also enjoy the spectacular view when sitting on the tidy queen bed. So, while the first impression underwhelmed, the room delivered a very nice view of the monument. I would recommend upgrading to a king-size room with a normal window and balcony to enjoy a non-angled glimpse of the area’s main attraction. The room itself was better than the pictures. The lounge chair was perfect for reading (and looking at the sky), the bed was comfortable with ample blankets, the television included well over one hundred, and the room came with a microwave and refrigerator. Much like the rest of the room, the bathroom was functional and compact but nothing out of the ordinary. Breakfast was included in the room rate. The buffet featured two different types of eggs, delicious spicy sausage, and the usual array of pastries, muffins, and continental fare. The hotel grounds provide excellent views of the monument. So, if you are unable to reserve a room with a mountain view, you can still snap pictures from the main grounds. The town of Keystone is theoretically walkable (10 minutes at a leisurely pace), but you will need to descend a narrow two-lane road. I can imagine that it might be a bit precarious during the high season. Nevertheless, the town has many eateries within minutes of the property. The entrance to Mount Rushmore is a short 10-minute drive, so the hotel gives you a nice head start to beat the crowds for early morning viewings. Overall, I recommend the K Bar S Lodge for its privileged view of Mount Rushmore. It’s worth a one-night stay as a bucket list item for visiting the area.

When booking this trip to the black hills, I started to suffer paralysis by analysis and just read the first few reviews for this hotel, thought the location great because I wanted to head back to Rushmore at night ro see it lit up and booked this hotel. It’s not a bad hotel , in fact it’s clean and comfortable-but the first couple reviews (Karla…, Lotus…) show pictures of Mount Rushmore that are much, much, much larger than reality - major zooming involved with those shots. Also, pictures of the lobby exaggerate its size- if one group is on the balcony, there really isn’t much room for others. Second, the restaurant wasn’t open as of the last week of April, and there really isn’t much to eat for dinner in Keystone during the off season- so expect to have to travel to Hill City for dinner ( this negated the reason I had chosen Keystone as a location). ( which also brings up why some one writes a review (Lotus…) 10 months AFTER their trip raving about a restaurant that isn’t currently operational). Finally, although breakfast is good, it’s an outside walk down a hill that might be problematic for some - I’ve attached a (horrible) picture of the map. Ice is also only available at the main desk until they are sure the potential for freezes has past ( after May sometime) ( I totally understand this). Also keep in mind that this is a destination for groups holding meetings and weddings - which might impact breakfast crowds and dinner options.

This hotel was in a great location for our visit to the Black Hills. As you are entering Keystone from the north, turn right at the stop light by the 1880's Train Station and it's just a short distance to the entrance of the property. While there were no rooms available with Mt Rushmore views, we were still able to see Mt Rushmore from the outdoor balcony in our building. It's a side view of George Washington mostly. At checkin, the front desk informed us that due to covid we would need to indicate if we wanted our room serviced by housekeeping and gave us a form to leave outside our door in the morning to request amenities like shampoo, toilet paper, towels, etc. We ate at the hotel each day for breakfast and at the hotel restaurant a couple nights for dinner. Breakfast was self serve and offered a variety of hot and cold items. It provided a good meal to start the day. For dinner, you scanned the QR code at the table and placed your order and paid through your phone. The service was quick and friendly. I like that they embraced this technology to keep their staff and guests safe. And the food was really good. We returned here for another dinner because the food was good.

The views are amazing from every area. My room faced a partial view of Mt. Rushmore and was wonderful to sit on the deck and relax, but you can't go wrong with a mountain view. The rooms had everything you need, breakfast was great with both hot and cold options available. The staff was friendly and Jordan was willing to help you with anything you needed. The grounds are amazing with lots of seating, a fire pit, a gazebo, and hiking trails. Each day you are greeted by deer. We utilized the meeting rooms that were well equipped and perfect for small groups.
