Remote but nice
Good views of Lake Powell. Nice restaurant with good options. Comfortable and quiet rooms. The people who work there were very accommodating and appreciative of the three of us who just came off of Trash Tracking.

Will not be back.
We reserved a family unit so that we could take my 81 yr old mother-in-law to see Lake Powell. We were terribly embarrassed. Upon our arrival they told us that check in wasn’t until 4pm. I told them our confirmation said 3pm. She said “I know, we’ve had trouble with that all summer. We had to wait for an hour and a half to check in. The aging single wide trailer was dated, filthy, and in dire need of repairs. None of the bedrooms had a closet. Two of the three had a cabinet to act as a closet. Bathtub curtains had orange mold/mildew stains. Toilet seat was loose. One of the burners on the stove didn’t work. The oven was filthy. The a/c unit leaked water all over the floor in the hallway. The windows are in need of cleaning. The provided gas grill was so filthy we didn’t use it. We weren’t told that we needed to call the office if we wanted the unit cleaned. Of course, there are no phones in the unit and we didn’t have a number to call. So we had to drive over to the hotel office and tell them when we wanted it cleaned. They didn’t clean it, they only delivered clean towels. Sometimes they didn’t bring the clean towels until after 4:30pm. The kitchen light fixture was full of bugs. The stove top was dirty and the a/c vent was covered in dirt. Please see the photos. The website said the kitchen was fully furnished. I beg to differ. There were no serving utensils, only one serving bowl. Everything we did use had to be washed first. Really no excuse for this.

Don't be fooled.
You can forgive Defiance a lot (like running out of eggs at breakfast) because of the magnificent view. But what I do take exception to is their web site picture of two couples who appear to be having a drink and hors d'oeuvres enjoying the view from the veranda. This is misleading tosh. Because of Utah's 18th Century licensing laws, you can't take a drink out there, or even a glass. No-one uses it. Equally the "full service bar" is nothing of the sort, and like the restaurant is run amateurishly. Enjoy the location, but don't get taken in by the web site.

On the edge of teh desert
I wanted our road trip to include a ferry crossing of Upper Lake Powell. There seemed to be little civilization around but I found Defiance House and thoroughly enjoyed my one night stay. Everything was as it should be and our balcony room allowed us to watch to Sun go down over the desert. The on site restaurant did not have much choice but what we had was good and the service was excellent. Caught the ferry the next moring - -had a fantastic time.
