Good Experience, Friendly Workers

The hotel and rates were good for 2 adults and a child. Our room kinda smelled like cigarette smoke so you can tell they have issues with people smoking in the room, which doesn't make sense cause they provide a covered area outside with chairs and ashtrays. Other than that, everything was great. The workers were super friendly and even asked if we wanted a bigger room because of the child. One of the workers, can't remember his name, always asked if there was anything we needed every time we saw him and always gave us what we asked for. If I come back, I'd stay here.

Would stay again

The inn is in a good location. The location is quiet. The room is clean and everything was in good working order. The room was large with ample drawer space and a closet with hangars. The shower had hot water and good water pressure. Parking is free.

Great old motel. Very well maintained, clean, friendly staff. Comfortable beds, felt safe well lit at night. Looking for fancy, not here, but great value. Great location for all that Luray and surrounding areas have to offer.

PROS * Good location close enough to Shenandoah National Park * Quite competitive pricing against various chain motels in the vicinity * Easy to find * Adequate room furniture * Tremendously and outstandingly comfortable gigantic big bed with many abundant pillows * Refrigerator and microwave * Parking at the door of the room * Big screen TV * Unlimited ice supply * Helpful friendly owner * Several gas stations with 24 hour convenience stores on premises with legalized gambling slot machines are open 24 hours a day and a walk of a minute or two * Fantastic discount rock-bottom prices supermarket is less than 5 minutes away and has the most beautiful friendly smiling and helpful staff CONS * The place is clearly retro vintage circa 1970s or earlier in its design and its furnishings * No coffee or tea or hot water stuff * Bathroom is from 1970 with individually wrapped little soap bars * The door has mechanical key with lock and bolt and hook * Lighting is inadequate- wall switches do not connect to overhead fixtures, but there are two lamps on the nighttables * The room is not cleaned every day * There is an envelope reminder to tip the cleaning person * Only way to contact the owner is through the booking website * The owner is not a native English speaker and it can be challenging to be understood and/or to understand "I VISITED THIS PLACE"... ... because it was the closest and best value and least cost for my hiking expeditions in Shenandoah National Park. I was quite content and happy and pleased with my stay there. The bed was fantastically comfortable!! WAS IT WORTH THE COST? Yes ADVICES If you are staying in lodging in Luray for any reason, then this is the best deal for you, considered from all the parameters, and that is based on my computer research before my visit as well as my personal experience.

Heading back from a North Carolina business trip, we planned a stop in Luray to visit the Luray Caverns (I have a separate review on this). A quick search landed a few reasonable options for our one-night stay. We chose the Cardinal – very reasonable at $75 + taxes, and in line with any of the national value brands. And we were not disappointed in our choice. The owner/manager ended up upgrading our room to a suite for the same rate we had booked at. The room was very clean, and while the décor may have been a bit dated was all in fine shape and, frankly, part of the charm of the space. The Cardinal is not far out of the downtown area (although not walking distance), and about 10 minutes from Luray Caverns which also makes it very convenient. I would definitely recommend the Cardinal for your stay in Luray! My standard hotel qualifier: I have stayed in many different hotels in Viet Nam, China, Indonesia, and India as well as France and Italy. On a level playing field, they have ranked from 5 star to -5 star. Some I would have liked to move into, and some I slept in my clothes on top of the covers. Sometimes you simply get what you pay for.
