The restaurant has been out of half the items on the menu. The coffee shop has a large case for items but very little actually in it. The banquet food has been not very good two nights in a row so far. To top it off, the wait staff assured our table with several food allergies that the food was fine when it was not. We had Benedryl and an epipen on hand. We had asked and checked multiple times before eating and shared the allergies with them but either they were poorly trained or simply did not care. I would not host any event or wedding here. A shame as it’s a lovely hotel to look at.

Best college experiences were at Hotel Madison

We have stayed here every visit since accepted student day, shortly after the hotel opened. They have always been super accommodating. A big thank you to Sean Mansfield for all his help over the years for the Parent Rewards Program. We will miss hanging out in your beautiful lobby. Thank you so much!!!

Sadly Disappointed

Published Date: May, 8, 2023 Travel Date: May, 1, 2023 Rating: 2 We were in town for a family wedding, and the couple recommended this hotel which was located in close proximity to the wedding venue. There was another lower-budget option mentioned on their wedding website, but the reviews were so much higher here, and we thought we would treat ourselves to a nicer, fancier hotel. What a let-down! The building is very conveniently located right next to the JMU campus. We had no problems with parking or check-in. The biggest issues were in the room. We opted for a king suite for our family of 5 (three young children ages 6-12). We brought our own twin-sized air mattress for one of our three kids, while the other two slept on the pull-out couch. I tried calling down to housekeeping and the front desk several times to request extra pillows and linens, but the line just kept ringing and ringing. So my son and I walked down to the front desk where they were happy to send someone up with the requested items. Said items arrived about 2 hours later, close to 10:00pm, when we were all very ready for bed. I woke up several times throughout the night because 1) the room was arctic cold (we were able to adjust the thermostat to a reasonable temperature), 2) the bed linens were paper thin (two thin sheets, no comforter or blanket ... I ended up layering dry bath towels on top of me for extra warmth), and 3) the mattress was extremely hard and uncomfortable. According to the website, the king suite boasts a "full kitchen." Said kitchen actually consisted of a full-size refrigerator, teeny-tiny sink, Keurig coffee maker, miniature dishwasher (which never worked - I tried several times but it said it was low on rinsing agent, which I reported to the front desk), microwave, and a two-burner glass-top stove. They also had 2 pots and an ancient skillet for cooking (forget non-stick ... everything stuck no matter how much butter I used ... I attempted cooking breakfast in the morning and that was a disaster). They also threw in some silverware, a few random cooking utensils, a plastic measuring cup, and a hot pad for good measure. No toaster, so I had to toast the bread in the skillet which sort of worked. I gave up on cooking and thought we might do better at the breakfast buffet in the hotel restaurant. Another mistake. They charge $11.99 per adult and $8.99 per child for a sub-standard buffet. The eggs were cold and bland, bacon and sausage OK, diced potatoes delicious, French Toast was stale and cold. Food quickly ran-out and the staff were tripping over themselves to refill everything; they couldn't stay on top of it. (I had to pull aside one of the bus boys to ask if more food was coming, and then they finally started refilling things.) Fruit had mushy soft spots. They ran out of clean plates and put out plastic plates and flatware instead. I have been to budget hotels with much better selection and much better tasting food ... that was FREE; not to mention much more comfortable beds and plentiful, plush linens. We will not be returning to this hotel.
