On the north bank of the San Juan River
The Inn/trading post/cafe have been here for years. I started staying here 25 years ago--room rates were about half as expensive then. The rooms are average (clean, never saw bugs/rodents), and the main office (trading post) has many Navajo-made items for sale and well as basic camping items. It is pet-friendly. There are chairs and tables outside, with great views of the San Juan river. The river is beginning to cut out a gorge that will become much deeper (see this at Goosenecks of the San Juan State Park in Utah) further west. The cafe is about average for a moderately isolated place like this; Their breakfasts are better than lunches or dinners. As you travel south, across the UT-AZ state line, accomodations will get more expensive (but you will have more choices, especially if you continue on to Kayenta).

Best value for Monument Valley
We chose this property because the ones inside the Monument Valley are outrageously expensive. With a 15 minute drive you reach the Valley - and get to shoot nice photos of the rock formations from Highway 163 "Forrest Gump Point".
Don't bother going to the village of Mexican Hat for breakfast or dinner; the hotel restaurant is your best bet.

Affordable, Updated Bathrooms
Small motel near Monument Valley. Perfect for 1-2 night stay. Cafe on site with decent breakfast, with a small shop for quick bites on the go. Only frustrating thing is that there was only one accessible outlet, and it was behind the nightstand.

Located right on the river off the main road. Clean nice rooms. Restaurant on the grounds. Food was ok service left a lot to be desired. Overall a good place to stay. They messed up our food orders twice.

Avoid the deluxe queen above the Trading Post.
Can't speak to the rest of the units but this room was remarkably run down. Air conditioning was not on when we entered at 9:30 pm and it was about 95 degrees in the room. It smelled badly of cleaning chemicals. The bed kept us rolling toward each other all night. There was no closet or hangers and the dead bolts just turned around and around when you tried to lock it. We were stuck for two nights and the owner was quite rude when we approached her about our desire to move to another unit for the second night. Not many choices in this part of the country but I'd avoid this place if possible.
