History of Trinity Lake
It is in our nature to seek progress, but most human beings can only see the possibility of progress where visible benefits are teeming. California was relatively a state without progress until someone struck gold, making the course of quick progress inevitable. Gold was struck around this area in the year 1848, and the benefits were abundantly available. Therefore, progress emerged almost instantly.
Towns began to grow, and people came calling to California, and the need for increasing commodities grew stronger. Two of the most important things that any progressive lands require are water and power, which is why in 1958 plans were set in motion to take care of both needs. These plans would direct the water from Trinity River to the Central Valley of California through the construction of the Trinity Dam.
Trinity Dam was completed in 1961, and it was a success because not only did it give water to the very thirsty Central Valley land of California, but it also provided hydroelectric power to the local pervading cities. By 1963, the reservoir was finally filled with water, and the project was complete. As it stands, Trinity Lake is the third largest lake in the sunny state of California. Trinity Lake did go through some identity issues and was renamed Clair Engle Lake from 1964 to 1997, in honor of US Senator Clair Engle who passed away while he was in office.
This identity crisis lasted for 33 years, but eventually the lake regained footing, regained strength and found itself once more because it returned to its original name: Trinity Lake. Trinity Lake has many roots, which extend far beyond the construction of the Trinity Dam.
Trinity Lake sits atop of a Native American land. This land belonged to many proud tribes, such as the Yurok and Hoopa tribes. Trinity Lake may have been born through the ingenuity and progressive spirit of gold diggers, but its soul was born within the hearts of Native American tribes. Tribes like the Yurok tribe understood their proverb that said, "Silence has so much meaning." This is evident to many who visit Trinity Lake because of its tranquility.
Those interested in learning more about the history of Trinity Lake, should visit the Jack Jackson Museum. The Jake Jackson Museum has done its best to recreate the Gold Rush Era of California with an operational blacksmith and stamp mill, as well as stagecoaches and wagons.
