Many people fought to protect Glacier National Park. Among these was one Louis Hill who headed up the Great Northern Railway and though his interests were business related he was instrumental in getting Glacier recognized as a national park in 1910. As soon as the national park status was secured Hill set about building an extensive European-style network of luxurious lodges and backcountry chalets in the area.
Louis Hill took great pains to ensure that the lodges were built to last, even taking a break as the manager of the Great Northern to focus on making sure the design and construction of the Glacier Park Lodge. His great attention to detail built a lodge that stands today as a testimony of Hill's passion. Once the hotel was up Hill ushered visitors into the park and into his lodge where then, as today, folks enjoy amazing scenery both from the lodge and through infamous Jammer bus tours, hiking, and other activities.
