Balloon Rides
Black Hills Balloons provides hot-air balloon rides. Balloons are launched from Custer early in the morning and flights end about noon. The route depends on the wind direction. The Crazy Horse monument is almost always visible from the balloon and frequently balloon riders can see Mt. Rushmore, but rarely up close.
Rock Hounding
If you are passionate about rocks and minerals Mt. Rushmore is the place to be! The unique geology of the Black Hills ranks it in the top five locations in the United States for variety of minerals. Besides the obvious "rock" gold, rockhounds can find more than 40 different minerals here, including rose quartz, copper, silver and feldspar. Keep your eye out for a Fairburn agate, the state's official gem, which is rusty brown with a white core that is visible when it's split in half; they are found in alluvial deposits along the foothills.
Technical Climbing
Technical Climbing is double the fun at Mt. Rushmore. The short, demanding, technical climbs abound in the Black Hills are an ideal way to explore different ways to reach individual summits. A guide to technical climbing called Climbing the Needles - Touch the Sky, published by the American Alpine Club, can be obtained at local bookstores. Equipment, maps and other information are available at many sports shops in Rapid City.
Water Activities
There are no lakes at Mount Rushmore but you will find there are several in the surrounding area particularly at Black Hills National Forest. These lakes are great for swimming and fishing. At Rushmore Waterslide you’ll find nine exciting slides up to 400 Ft. Long, as well as a kiddie pool.
Sturgis
Each August, hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists journey to the Mecca of the motorcycling world: Sturgis, South Dakota. The enormous and renowned Sturgis, South Dakota, motorcycle rally draws serious riders from all over the world. In addition to a million motorcycles you will find vendors selling a vast array of goods lining the streets throughout the downtown area.
Digging for Gold
Big Thunder Gold Mine. Here you can dig your own gold ore! Activities include: Guided Mine Tours • Panning for Real Gold • Historic Film • Museum Displays • Snack Bar and Free Coffee • Picnic Area
Rushmore Tramway
Rushmore Tramway offers a mountaintop garden with outdoor café, scenic chairlift ride and alpine slide ride. The smooth chairlift takes guests to beautiful summit park area where you will enjoy thousands of flowers, waterfalls, and a view of Mount Rushmore. To decent, choose chairlift again or take a sled down 2000 exciting feet of track.
Black Hills Central Railroad
Imagine yourself immersed in the staggering beauty of the Black Hills of Western South Dakota aboard a vintage steam train like those that helped settle the Great American West. Located in Hill City and Keystone between Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorials.
