The Historic Requa Inn

The Historic Requa Inn is an 11-room bed-and-breakfast inn located on the north California coast. Located on the Klamath River, just one mile from the ocean -- catering to American and international hikers, fishermen, paddlers, bikers, birders, beachcombers, and outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds.

A hotel has been operating on this site almost continuously since the 1880s.

Today’s Requa Inn combines the comfort and friendliness of a casual bed-and-breakfast with the privacy and personal service of a small hotel. It’s a quiet and cozy base-camp for all your redwood adventures.

Driving north on Highway 101 through Klamath, in the distance you can see the big white building that is the Historic Requa Inn (pronounced RECK-wah). It’s across the Klamath River on Requa Hill, and it stands out in the landscape because it is the only remaining commercial building in the once-bustling fishing town of Requa, now a quiet residential area. Constructed in 1914, the building is plain, almost utilitarian, built for rustic comfort rather than Victorian stylishness.

Accommodations

Every room in the Inn is different, and there is sure to be one that is just right for you. Some have magnificent views of the Klamath River. Many have claw-foot bathtubs and are furnished in antiques. All have wonderfully comfortable beds dressed in crisp white cotton sheets, down pillows and comforters, and quilts. You’ll enjoy the cozy warmth of down even in the summer with a cool ocean breeze drifting through your bedroom window. All rooms are on the second floor of the hotel. Sorry, Requa Inn does not have an elevator.

The season is defined as May 1 to September 30. Off- season is October 1 to April 30.

Children must be at least 8 yrs old to stay at Requa Inn.

As an expression of our love for hiking in the redwoods, we have named our rooms after area trails.

Requa Inn Room Options

Rhododendron Room

Rhododendron
Until we added our new rooms in the east wing, this was our most popular room.  Located in the southwest corner of the Inn, the Rhododendron Room has a river view, lovely natural light, an antique birds-eye maple queen bed set, new carpet, and wallpaper that we believe is original to the 1914 building. The room’s private bath, built in the old water tower, is charming if small, and has a claw-foot tub and shower. Click on the photo to see bigger pictures.Maximum 2 people, no children.

Dolason Prairie

Dolason Prairie
Dolason Prairie is a large northwest corner room with two twin beds and a nice sitting area with a sofa, chair and coffee table. The private bathroom, built in the old water tower, is small but functional with a large new walk-in shower. Maximum 2 people.

Emerald Ridge

Emerald Ridge
Another popular river view room, Emerald Ridge has a large, new private bathroom with a combination tub/shower. The bedroom, decorated with the original 1914 wallpaper, has an antique walnut queen bed set. Click on the photo to see bigger pictures. Maximum 2 people, no children.

Stout Grove (2 Bedroom Suite)

Stout Grove
Two small bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with a double bed, with one bathroom shared by the two rooms.  Bathroom includes a claw-foot tub with shower.  Click on the photo to see bigger pictures. Room occupancy not to exceed four. Count the kids in your total, and remember that we do not accept babies or small children.

Carruthers Cove

Carruthers Cove
One of our largest and brightest rooms, Carruthers Cove has four large windows overlooking the river, a four-poster king bed with mariner’s quilt, a new electric fireplace, and a large private bath with walk-in shower.  The bathroom was completely renovated in late 2006. Click on the photo to see bigger pictures. Maximum 2 people, no children.

Boat Creek

Rhododendron
Boat Creek is a bright and charming river view room that has a queen bed. Relax in the comfortable sitting area while enjoying a grand view of the river.  This room has a private bath with a walk-in shower. Click on the photo to see bigger pictures. Maximum 2 people.

Redwood Creek

Redwood Creek
Redwood Creek is small but bright and comfortable. The room has a full-size four-poster bed, Douglas fir hardwood floor, and a private bath including a claw-foot tub with shower. Click on the photo to see a bigger picture. In season, we must limit this room to single occupancy. Off season, double occupancy is fine.

Cathedral Trees

Cathedral
Cathedral Trees was created in 2004 from two small unused rooms on the river side of the Inn.  It is arguably our most beautiful room.  It features a queen-size birds-eye maple four-poster pillow-top bed and matching maple dresser.  Twin antique velvet chairs provide a comfortable view of the river.  A romantic claw-foot tub is situated with a river view as well.  We used a white vessel sink mounted on an antique commode to create the look of the pitcher and basin that was probably the only water in the room when it was constructed in 1914.  (Ours does have running water!)  In addition to the tub, this room has a separate bathroom with a toilet and 48-inch shower. Click on the photo to see bigger pictures. Maximum 2 people, no children.

Hidden Beach

Hidden Beach
In the northeast corner of the Inn, Hidden Beach is small, cozy and economical, with a beautiful antique walnut bed set.  In spring and early summer, you can hear a gurgling brook outside your window.  The room has a double bed and a private bath including a claw-foot tub with shower.  Click on the photo to see a bigger picture. In season, single occupancy. Off season, double occupancy.

Fern Canyon

Fern Canyon
Fern Canyon, a southeast corner room with an expansive view of the river, is our largest and most breathtaking room. It has a four-poster king-size bed and deluxe mattress.  Often this is the room guests choose after touring all of them.  The room’s only shortcoming is its small but functional private bath with claw-foot tub and shower.  The smaller-than-standard tub supposedly came from a 19th century passenger ship. In spring and early summer, guests in Fern Canyon are lulled to sleep by the sound of a brook that runs along the east side of the building. Click on the photo to see bigger pictures.  Maximum 2 people, no children.

Gentle Reminders
Children are people too and must be included in room occupancy. We accept well-behaved children 8 years of age and older; no babies, toddlers or young children. We do not accept pets. We do not have roll-away beds, nor do we allow extra people to stay in rooms designed for one or two. Please do not bring sleepings bags or air mattresses.

Policies

Checking In and Out

Guests are welcom from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. If you want to check in early, please call and make arrangements as the lobby will sometimes be locked from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for cleaning and shopping. If you are going to be arriving later than 9 p.m., please call ahead so that you don’t find the door locked when you arrive. If you plan to arrive later than 11 p.m., you should stay elsewhere. You can’t enjoy your stay at Requa Inn when you arrive late at night, and keep in mind that Requa Inn is not a motel with a 24-hour front desk staff. Check-out time is 11 a.m.

Cancellations & Deposits

For individual reservations, call before 3 p.m. the day of your arrival and in order to cancel your reservation without any charges. If you do not provide notification by that time, your credit card will be charged for one night’s stay. No deposit is required for individual reservations.

For groups with three or more rooms reserved, the reservation must be cancelled fourteen days prior to the date of arrival. Groups that cancel with less than fourteen days’ notice will be charged for their first night’s stay less any rooms that the Requa Inn is able to re-rent. A deposit may be required.

Burning Ban

Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the building, however there is outdoor smoking areas on either the front or back porch where ashtrays are kept for those who wish to smoke. Candles and incense are also taboo because of worry about fire in an old wooden structure.

Pets

Sorry but pets are no longer accepted in the Inn.

Children

People visit the Requa for the beauty and tranquility. Nothing shatters that faster than a crying infant or a four-year-old running, yelling, and rubbing sticky hands all over the antiques and books. Therefore, only older, well-behaved children are accepted, (minimum age of 8 years required), and we limit the number of children staying at the Inn at one time to four.

Travelers choose the Historic Requa Inn for many reasons:

View

The Inn is on Requa Road, less than 100 yards from the banks of the Klamath River (the property includes over 300 feet of river frontage), and it overlooks Redwood National Park. From the living room and dining room, guests have front row seats at an ever-changing natural pageant. Being less than a mile from the ocean, the river rises and falls with the tide. Sunlight and wisps of clouds weave in and out of the towering trees on the other side of the river creating a tapestry of light, shadow and mist. Sea lions and river otters are often seen playing in the estuary waters, and ravens and eagles soar effortlessly overhead. You can spend a pleasant day sitting on the Inn’s front porch or inside at a window doing nothing more than relaxing and watching the world go by.

Location

Located in the center of Redwood National Park, the Historic Requa Inn is the perfect starting point for exploration of the park, which is also a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve.

The Inn is just one mile from the ocean. You can see the mouth of the river and the ocean beyond from a few vantage points at the Inn (we often hear the sea pounding the shoreline from the Inn), or we can give you directions to hike to secluded beaches on both the north and south sides of the river.

Atmosphere and Quiet

The Inn has a home-like atmosphere without the feeling that you are invading someone’s home space. Guests enjoy sipping wine by the fire in the living room, reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, watching birds, and meeting other travelers from all parts of the country and world. Most people find the absence of television and telephones relaxing, but for those who require a small dose of the “other world,” we have a television tucked away in the piano room and a guest phone in the lobby.

Bailey’s Dining Room
Our dining room is called Bailey’s in honor of W. T. Bailey, the man who built the Requa Inn in 1914. W. T. Bailey was known for his enthusiasm and hospitality -- both traits we hope to carry on at the Requa today.

Bailey’s overlooks the beautiful Klamath River, and is the only dining room in Klamath with a spectacular view.

The food at Bailey’s is like the Inn itself: substantial and without a lot of frills. We focus on fresh ingredients -- organic and regional when possible -- simply prepared.

Breakfast is always included with your room at the Requa. Dinner is additional.

Breakfast

Our self-serve coffee and tea service are ready around 7 a.m. each morning for early risers (almost everyone becomes an early riser during their stay at the Requa -- mornings are too beautiful to sleep through). From 8 to 9 a.m., we serve a hearty cooked-to-order hot breakfast that includes eggs, bacon or sausage, fluffy buttermilk hotcakes and other griddle delicacies, homemade whole-wheat toast, creamy whole-milk yogurt, homemade California granola, Scottish oatmeal, seasonal fresh fruit, and juice. It’s a breakfast that will prepare you for hiking, kayaking, fishing, beachcombing, or any outdoor activity you choose.

Dinner
Guests are also invited to have dinner at the Inn. During our season (May through September), we have a dinner party at 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at which everyone sits together and shares a delicious 4-course, family-style meal. In the off season (fall and spring), dinner is served only on Friday and Saturday nights. Our menu is fixed, with 2 or 3 choices of entree. The price for 3 courses (dessert is additional) ranges from $16 to $24, depending on the entree you choose.

To have dinner at the Inn, you need to make a reservation by 6 p.m.

We always have choices for vegetarians. If you have other special dietary needs, please let us know in advance and we’ll do our very best to accommodate you.

Although we set a pretty table with white linens and candles, dress is very casual at Bailey’s. Half the people in the room will be wearing hiking shorts or boots.

Our little dinner parties are lots of fun. You get a chance to talk with people from all over the country, sometimes the world. In several seasons of doing dinners this way in the spring and fall, we have never had an evening when the dining room was quiet. Quite the opposite. Sometimes we have to turn the lights out at 11 p.m. to get people to stop talking and go to bed.

If our dinner is not right for your party, we are happy to recommend other local and regional restaurants. Our favorite dining spots around the area:

Arcata: La Trattoria -- exquisite Italian cusine made with local, fresh ingredients

Trinidad: Larrupin Cafe & Moonstone Grill

Orick: La Hacienda -- authentic Mexican cusine

Klamath: Forest Cafe, Steelhead Lodge

Crescent City: Beachcomber, Bistro Garden, Chart Room, Wing Wah, Toreros, Thai House

If you know you will be arriving after 9 p.m., we advise stopping for dinner before you get to Klamath. Local restaurants here close early.
