Yellowstone attracts tens of thousands of visitors every winter. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to the area for it's snowmobiling opportunities, cross country ski options, wildlife viewing, and to gaze at the incomparable beauty of Yellowstone Park's winter landscape.
The town of West Yellowstone, located directly outside the west entrance to the park, is a snowmobiling mecca throughout the winter season. Many of the hotels and lodges in West Yellowstone offer winter lodging packages that include snowmobiling trips & tours both inside and outside the park.
Snowmobiling inside the park is subject to several national park regulations. Only certain models of snowmobile are allowed inside the park and you must be accompanied by a certified guide at all times while riding inside the park.
West Yellowstone snowmobiling guides and outfitters offer daily trips to multiple destinations inside the park including the old faithful area, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. They also offer daily snowcoach tours for those who want a more laid-back experience.
Three Bear Lodge, Hibernation Station and The Brandin' Iron Inn in West Yellowstone all offer lodging and snowmobile package deals in the winter. You can choose from guided trips into Yellowstone Park, or enjoy guided and non-guided trips outside the park in the public and forest service lands surrounding West Yellowstone. Got a couple days? Why not try a little of both. The snowmobiling outfitters in West Yellowstone can customize a plan to fit your schedule and needs.
Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing

Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing is another popular winter sport in the area. Yellowstone Park is home to many cross country trails in the winter season. Both groomed ski and snowshoeing trails and backcountry routes are available in many areas of the park. Winter provides a fantastic opportunity to see a side of the park that is not available during the summertime. The chances of wildlife viewing is always better in the winter time, and the kaleidoscope of snow, steam and ice transforms the Yellowstone countryside into a completely different world from the one that most visitors see during the rest of the year.
Anyone taking overnight excursions into the park must obtain a Backcountry Permit from the park ahead of time. The Old Faithful area is a favorite location among skiiers because it has 40 miles of cross-country courses. One popular 8-mile trail beginning at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge is called Lonestar Geyser Trail, and takes skiers into a secluded wilderness setting. The Fern Cascades Trail takes skiers around a 3-mile loop leading around the Old Faithful geyser basin. The Biscuit Basin Trail and Upper Geyser Basin Trail are near Mammoth Hot Springs. These trails may take up to a full day, but visitors claim they are worth the time.
Downhill Skiing
If you are more of an alpine/downhill ski enthusiast, you will appreciate that there are several great ski resorts in the area as well.
Big Sky Ski Resort is located about 12 miles northwest of the Town of West Yellowstone. Big Sky is a very family friendly ski resort. It has 150 trails, including easy trails for beginners and challenging runs and wall rides for experts. They also offer ski clinics and camps for people of all ages.
Grand Targhee Resort is located just south of Yellowstone Park on the western slopes of the Teton Mountains. This area averages 500 inches of fluffy snow every year. Grand Targhee Resort is recognized for its variety of runs, which cater to skiers of all abilities, and its family-oriented amenities including slope-side daycare.
