Yellowstone Park is the home to nearly half of all the geothermal features on the planet. Winter accentuates these unique features even more. During the winter the rising steam from the geysers, fumaroles, hot springs and other geothermal features freezes and crystallizes in the winter air and becomes a million microscopic diamonds that sparkle and glitter as they are carried away on the breeze. The largest hot spring in the park is the Grand Prismatic Spring. The vivid colors of Grand Prismatic Spring are the result of pigmented bacteria in the microbial mats that grow around the edges of the mineral-rich water.
Other hot springs here include Morning Glory, Emerald, Abyss, and Sapphire Springs. The Mammoth Hot Springs continually change in size and color. It's a very popular winter destination with a lodge nearby, and is easy to reach by car.
Yellowstone winter visitors can still take advantage of the soothing natural hot springs throughout the winter season and many people consider the hot springs colorful features to be even more impressive against a backdrop of pure snow then they are against the colorful canvas of spring, summer and fall.
Geysers are another distinguishing natural wonder here. Yellowstone has more than 300 geysers - the most anywhere in the world! Some erupt each minute, while others may sit dormant for months. Steam and hot water shoot up through narrow rock passageways, making a spectacular display year-round. Steamboat Geyser is the largest in the world, and erupts reaching heights of 300 to 400 feet. Riverside is another unique geyser which sprays at an angle over the Firehole River, often forming a rainbow in the chilly winter air. Old Faithful is the most famous geyser in the park, and there are lodges nearby with excellent views of this geyser basin. The Old Faithful Snow Lodge is one of the few lodges inside the park that remains open throughout the year.
The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and the Absaroka and Gallatin mountain ranges are gorgeous in the winter while covered with snow. Yellowstone Lake and Pine forests also provide tremendous scenery in the wintertime. Deep, powdery trails open up a variety of possibilities on how to explore this rambling wilderness. There is so much incredible winter scenery to behold and so many activities to enjoy in Yellowstone during the winter, you should definitely not let winter's cooler temperatures keep you from experiencing the magnificent landscape and adventure of Yellowstone National Park in the winter.
