Lake Powell is a man-made lake that was formed by Glen Canyon Dam. The name Powell is derived from the name of Civil War veteran John Wesley Powell. Powell only had one arm but he led a scientific expedition in wooden boats down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 1869.
