Canyon de Chelly Rock Art Viewing
Canyon de Chelly National Monument has some of the finest rock art in Arizona. Although it is a national monument, Canyon de Chelly belongs to the Navajo and it is part of their reservation. You will need a Navajo guide to visit rock art sites in the canyon and they are available to accompany you in your own 4WD vehicle.

Picnicking
You might want to pack a lunch and have a picnic, due to the lack of eating establishments in the general area of Canyon de Chelly National Park. Picnicking areas are available in the park, six tables and water are located at the headquarter's campground also six tables, fireplaces and restrooms are located near Spider Rock Overlook.
Photography
The Petrified Forest is a stone oasis in the Painted Desert, the Petrified Forest is littered with the stone relics of the forest that once stood here 225 million years ago! This is a great place to bring your camera, you can start at the Rainbow Forest Museum. Learn about the history the forest, the amazing dinosaurs and early flora and fauna that once roamed this vast area. Then set off on an adventure hike of your own. The petrified forest is about 3 hours from the Cameron Trading Post.
Monument Tours
Autos should use paved roads only. To drive on the canyon bottom, a 4-wheel drive vehicle, a Park Service permit and an authorized Navajo guide are required. The fee is $15.00 an hour for 1 vehicle, $5 an hour for each additional vehicle with a 5-vehicle limit per guide.
Equestrian Tours
Guided tours on horseback are provided by two NPS-authorized stables. Tours are by the hour with extended rides and overnight trips available. Free permits required.
Trails and Hiking
Hiking within the canyon requires a Park Service permit and an authorized Navajo guide, except along the 2.5-mile White House Ruins Trail. One guide may take up to 15 people for $15.00 per hour.
Camping
Campsites are available at no charge on a first-come, first-served basis year-round. Reservations for group sites of 15 or more people can be made by contacting the Monument. No reservations are accepted for RV groups. Backcountry camping is allowed with an authorized guide.
